Side by side

How we picked

This guide draws from a pool of 22 priced listings, narrowed to 14 consoles after removing near-duplicates. The selection follows the rule of listings within the guide's budget window. Consoles are compared on stated details and live prices, with picks ordered by stated storage (most first), then stated screen size (largest first for handhelds), then the order in the pool file. Listings without a stated storage come last. The guide spans multiple platforms, including Nintendo, Xbox, and PC handhelds, with no more than four picks from any single platform.

How to choose

Pick the family first

The platform family is the first decision because games and accessories are chosen for a family, not across families. This guide includes Nintendo, Xbox, and PC handheld listings, so decide which family fits the games and accessories you already have or plan to buy. The stated platform in each listing tells you the family.

Home console or handheld

Home consoles are stated for TV use, while handhelds have a built-in screen, and hybrids describe both uses. If the console will sit in a living room, a home or hybrid form works. If portability matters, a handheld or hybrid offers a screen built in. The form field in each listing states which type it is.

Disc or digital edition

Some listings state a digital edition, meaning no disc drive, while others do not state an edition, which may include a disc drive. If you own physical discs, you need a console with a disc drive, so check the listing for the edition. Digital editions suit buyers who download games instead.

Storage: what the number means

Storage is the room for what you install, and listings state it in gigabytes or terabytes. A larger number means more space for games and apps, but the guide does not say how many games fit. Some listings do not state storage, so the number is not available for those.

What a bundle means

A bundle means the title states extra items come in the box, such as a game or a membership. The guide says only what the title states, and you should read the listing for the exact items. Bundles do not change the console itself, only what is included.

What this guide leaves out (and why)

This guide compares consoles on stated details and live prices, but it does not cover game libraries, frame rates, battery life, or other performance measures because the catalogue has no data for them. The site does not guess at these details. Use the stated specs and the live price to make your choice.

Questions

Does this guide cover game libraries, frame rates, or battery life?

No. This guide compares consoles on the details stated in each listing, such as storage, screen size, form, and bundle contents, along with live prices. The catalogue has no data for game libraries, frame rates, or battery life, and the site does not guess at these details. For those, you would need to check the maker's official pages or the listing itself.

What does 'digital edition' mean in this guide?

A digital edition means the listing states the console is all-digital, so it has no disc drive. This guide notes the edition when it is stated, and it does not rank digital versus disc editions. If you own physical discs, you need a console with a disc drive, so check the listing for the edition.

How are the picks ordered in this guide?

Picks are ordered by stated storage, from most to least, then by stated screen size for handhelds, largest first, and then by the order in the pool file. Listings that do not state storage come last, in pool order. This ordering is based on the details in the catalogue, not on price or popularity.

Why do some listings not state storage or screen size?

The catalogue includes only what the seller states in the listing. If a detail like storage or screen size is missing, it is not stated by the seller, and this guide does not guess at it. You can check the full listing for more details, but the guide only reports what is available.

Can I trust the prices shown in this guide?

The prices are live prices read from the listings at a specific time, and they are printed with the clock time on the page. Prices can change, so the guide does not compare prices in the text. The live price is shown for each pick, and you should check the listing for the current price.
